LPA program changes welcomed by SA livestock producers

Livestock SA has welcomed recent changes announced as part of the ongoing development of the Livestock Production Assurance program, with a greater focus on biosecurity and animal welfare practices.

Livestock SA Vice President Joe Keynes said the changes help to maintain the integrity of South Australia’s red meat industry.

“The LPA program underpins the excellent returns livestock producers are currently enjoying,” he said.

“If we don’t keep enhancing our systems we are at risk of losing how well we can compete in current beef, sheep and lamb markets, particularly from a global perspective.”

“It’s important that all livestock producers are well versed with the changes, and how they can implement them on-farm.”

Changes to the LPA program include:

  • On-farm biosecurity and animal welfare practices to be included in the LPA program
  • LPA accredited producers will need to complete a regular assessment
  • New online learning modules will be introduced to upskill producers
  • Free electronic National Vendor Declarations will be further rolled out

Mr Keynes says the LPA program changes will be introduced from October 1, but in preparation for the changes an animal welfare module will be included within LPA learning from next month.

“Producers will need to be demonstrate that they have implemented systems to ensure livestock handling is consistent with Australian Animal Welfare Standards & Guidelines,” he said.

“Livestock SA will hold a series of workshops to ensure SA producers are aware of the latest changes.”
